We are pleased to report that we have a new distributor for our CD's and digital releases, the Select-O-Hits company. Located here in Memphis Tn, Select-O-Hits was founded in 1960 by Tom Phillips and his legendary brother Sam Phillips of Sun Records (read ELVIS). This video is our first order of business, and was produced by Wes Philips & Blake Franklin at the Select-O-Hits warehouse....hence the title. Very special thanks to Heath Borden and Johnny Phillips at Select-O-Hits for believing. And we cannot possibly forget Ric Chetter, Jeff Janovets and Averill Conway at Radio Memphis and their Sunday night Blues & Booze show for getting the ball rolling.
Yes, I am absolutely bragging! After seeing them for the first time on
August 31st at Jack Magoo's on Broad I needed to see them again, and
immediately.

Luckily, Radio Memphis hosted
Sturgis Nikides and Mandy Lemons the very next night for the Booze
& Blues program. While they were in the studio I had the pleasure of
pulling up a piece of carpet directly in front of the duo.

If you have the opportunity of meeting Low Society, you should. They are
quiet a dynamic force. Mandy Lemons is a petite woman with an eclectic
punk style all of her own. Lemons' hair is blonde like Marilyn, but cut
in a fashion that is
reminiscent of Bettie. The wing tips of her eyeliner are a virtual Pied Piper trail enticing fans with her brilliance. She is intriguing, radiant, and exudes sultriness. Her voice is a powerful, emotional experience and supernaturally soulful.

Lemons'
bandmate and husband, Sturgis Nikides wears sunglasses, indoors, at
night. When he speaks, New York escapes through his voice. He dresses in
black. His bare forearms hold colorful sleeved tattoos that dance on
his arms as he slides his fingers across the strings of his guitars in
the style of Elmore James. Nikides creates foot-stomping delight and
electrified splendor with a guitar.

Before he even takes the stage to pick the first note on the guitar the
connectivity between him and Lemons is visibly palpable. Together they
are seamless. When she takes the microphone and
opens her mouth to sing she commands presence. The hairs on the back of
my neck stand to
attention, receptors ignite all of my senses, and I realize that I am
witnessing greatness.

Their music is abundant in the sounds of the past, present, and future of Americana blues, but it specifically encapsulates the shimmering heat of the Deep South. I have an essential, primal need to ingest their dirty, electric, Southern Blues. So much going on! For starters, we returned from our long awaited tour of Eastern Europe just before Thanksgiving. The Bluesalive Festival in Sumperk, Czech Republic, was the highlight of our trip. We'll post some more amazing photo's, like the one above, soon.
Those of you in Memphis know we've been holding down the fort at the Buccaneer Lounge for 6 months now. We go on at 11PM every Weds night, with our "rabbi", legendary saxophonist Dr. Herman Green. He's been a crucial player in our Memphis sojourn, guiding us every step of the way. Every show we play with Herman is a privilege we do not take lightly. We love you Dr. Green!
Tomorrow afternoon (Thurs 12/6 - @3PM CST) we will be broadcasting a live concert on Ditty TV in downtown Memphis. It's a free show, and if you would like to attend there's limited seating available. Contact us for details at info@screaminblues.com.
Just added a fabulous New Years Eve gig to our schedule - the 5th Annual Guitar Drop at the Hard Rock Cafe on Beale Street. We'll be on the main stage outside at 9PM and then inside the club for our first full set of 2013 at 1AM. Info & tickets available HERE.
We realize that our vampire-like late night appearances at the Bucc aren't the most convenient for all of you folks who have to get up early and go to WORK. We are equal opportunity entertainers, so we've got a pair of Saturday night gigs just for YOU!! We'll be at Kudzus on Monroe Ave on Sat 12/15 & Sat 12/29. Showtimes will be approximately 10PM(ish).
That does it for todays installment...much more to come!!STURGIS NIKIDEShttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02195684151508609178noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4687980083528687368.post-89461526273846282062012-07-28T21:08:00.000-07:002012-07-28T21:12:14.812-07:00Interview with Gene Gregorits!Brand new Low Society interview by Gene Gregorits on his website http://www.sexandgutsradio.com/radio/. For those of you who don't know about Gene, we highly recommend you read his amazing novel, Dog Days.

Gene and Low Society's taller half Sturgis go way back. You can read all about it in one of Gene's other fine publications 'Midnight Mavericks'.

We also found this great interview with Matt Marshall of the American Blues Scene website filed in the "better late than never" section. We did the interview back on April 16 at this years Juke Joint Festival in Clarksdale Mississippi. It was published to their website later that week, but we were still on the road and neglected to share it with you.

Low Society is a revved up blend of blues, rockabilly, country and punk rock complete with babes, tattoos and bad attitudes. This slice of New York City life features the bodacious Miss Mandy Lemons as their resident vocal slinger and Mr. Sturgis Nikides of the blazing fingers on all guitars, dobro and banjo. Filling out the Society are C.P. Roth, Rowdy Bodine, and Charlie Walker working a swing shift on bass and drums. These hipsters have taken southern country blues and super-charged it to a white-hot intensity.

The North Mississippi blues of "Given Up On Love" has a slashing slide drive and Mandy has an intense quiver to her voice. A sparkling slide dobro and tambourine inhabit the "Dead Mans Shoes" as Lemons runs through a host of deadly allegories. Slipping in a few Janis Joplin styled ballads, "Three Time Loser" has a shimmering Leslie guitar while "Texas Goodnight" has a hauntingly moody slide; Lemons belts out some deep soulful wails on both. Going down home with a slide dobro Lemons gives a wild-eyed rant on "Crazy Love". "Black Pelican" has a grinding deep slide backing and snarling growl that cascades to an echoing finish. The Society concludes with Miss Mandy's raving and a ripping slide infused version of Lazy Lester's "Sugar Coated Love", bringing a whole new feel to that gentle tune.

The Low Society's "High Time" does exactly what their name and title implies injecting high intensity to this low down blues.
Also of note, our 'Dead Mans Shoes' is on the Big City Rhythm & Blues CD Sampler. The song is in the running for "Coolest Blues Song in the World 2012" and you can cast your vote for us at http://www.bigcitybluesmag.com/Sampler-rating-11-2.html
This week literally came down to a single vote from over a thousand in two of the top five positions. Bobby Messano's "That's Why I Don't Sing the Blues" is still hanging in there at #1, followed closely by The Mojo Roots "Thirteen Shades of Blue" in the #2 slot. Low Society's "High Time" has moved up another digit to the #3 position. Please keep up the daily voting and help us score the #1 slot!!
