High Time reviewed in Big City Rhythm & Blues Magazine

From the Dec 2011/Jan 2012 issue of Big City Rhythm & Blues Magazine:

Low Society is a revved up blend of blues, rockabilly, country and punk rock complete with babes, tattoos and bad attitudes. This slice of New York City life features the bodacious Miss Mandy Lemons as their resident vocal slinger and Mr. Sturgis Nikides of the blazing fingers on all guitars, dobro and banjo. Filling out the Society are C.P. Roth, Rowdy Bodine, and Charlie Walker working a swing shift on bass and drums. These hipsters have taken southern country blues and super-charged it to a white-hot intensity.

The North Mississippi blues of "Given Up On Love" has a slashing slide drive and Mandy has an intense quiver to her voice. A sparkling slide dobro and tambourine inhabit the "Dead Mans Shoes" as Lemons runs through a host of deadly allegories.  Slipping in a few Janis Joplin styled ballads, "Three Time Loser" has a shimmering Leslie guitar while "Texas Goodnight" has a hauntingly moody slide; Lemons belts out some deep soulful wails on both. Going down home with a slide dobro Lemons gives a wild-eyed rant on "Crazy Love". "Black Pelican" has a grinding deep slide backing and snarling growl that cascades to an echoing finish. The Society concludes with Miss Mandy's raving and a ripping slide infused version of Lazy Lester's "Sugar Coated Love", bringing a whole new feel to that gentle tune.

The Low Society's "High Time" does exactly what their name and title implies injecting high intensity to this low down blues.

Competition was FIERCE for this week's BLUES TOP FIVE chart! This week literally came down to a single vote from over a thousand in two of the top five positions. Bobby Messano's "That's Why I Don't Sing the Blues" is still hanging in there at #1, followed closely by The Mojo Roots "Thirteen Shades of Blue" in the #2 slot. Low Society's "High Time" has moved up another digit to the #3 position. Please keep up the daily voting and help us score the #1 slot!!

First Review of High Time CD

Low Society's High Time CD Reviewed By Gene Gregorits:

High Time is an audacious dirty blues record, the first by veteran New York slide specialist Sturgis Nikides under this particular name, which is a collaboration between he and singer Mandy Lemons. They are New York City's answer to Richard and Linda Thompson (not least because the duo actually married last winter); these songs are determinedly obsessed with classic blues themes, and they are stabbingly bitter works, indeed. Nikides returns more fearsome than ever before; a fucking beast on guitar (National Steel, of course). And then there’s Lemons, a force of nature in her own right. It’s the kind of murderous bitch-belting to shrink your dinky and give you blue balls all at once. When I say that the woman has a howl to peel paint, I mean it as a compliment. And the result of these two together…well, I can’t help smiling at a memory of a performance they gave in NY recently which I was left feeling fairly panicked by. I think that’s a natural response to an aberrant energy such as Low Society’s. If there’s anyone else doing something close to this right now, I haven’t heard it. Consummate professionalism is rare (perhaps because for most groups, it simply isn’t necessary), but to hear the savagery of these performers coupled with their purist agility, which at times borders on mythical, is something which needs no introduction or explanation. Just as rare is classicism, and here are those classic southern wasteland blues brought back defibrillated and speed-dosed, by two downtown demons who know their way around Hell better than the living are ever really supposed to. It’s all in the grooves, as they say, and you can’t help but hear it. Psychotic and masterful, this is a record and a group to pay serious attention to.

TONIGHT I SAW A FANTASTIC BAND WHICH WILL BUST OUT ALL OVER THE TRI STATE AREA SOON!!! THAT BAND IS... LOW SOCIETY!!!
THIS NO BULLSHIT 4 PIECE SET UP COMES WITH AN EVIL SLIDE GUITARIST, A SLITHERY BASSIST, A SPOT ON DRUMMER...AND SOME BITCH FROM OUTER SPACE WHO IS KICKIN ' THE SHIT OUT OF ME!.
The tunes are super well crafted with their foundation firmly imbedded in the delta blues/ rock tradition. Oddly enough this relatively new group sounds like a band who have been together many years.. the bassist is interlocked with the guitarists phrasing as is the drummer, and the singer just puts the icing on his already delicious cake. The singers vocals are so powerful and so full of spirit and exuberance , it cause one to be distracted buy just how truly great the rest of the band is... This guitarist is pure and honest... No stupid "Van Halen" or meatball corny tricks. He's got a Doctors degree in "Don't fuck with me" licks. The bassist is always there.. always .. the bottom , steady , tasty, married with the bass drum and that pocket which is created by him and the snare drum. Man that drummer is tribal! And this no bullshit female vocalist....IS THE BEST THAT THE TRI STATE AREA HAS TO OFFER RIGHT NOW!! NO SHIT! ..I'LL LAY MONEY ON IT!!! SHE IS THE REAL THANG!!!
SO FOR ALL YOU SCHMUCKS OUT THERE WHO LISTEN TO BAD COVER BANDS AND LOUSY NO TALENT BANDS... GO LISTEN TO A REAL BAND! ....GO LISTEN TO LOW SOCIETY!
